Thank you!

You might be new at this, but I don't think giving good advice is something only seasoned writers can do, and your advice is definitely useful! It is true that sooner or later you have to say to yourself that enough is enough, and there is a reason that many writing books have a chapter on "when to stop." With my current story I have a specific end point that I need to get to before the first draft will be finished, but when I see how many things I have added before that, you definitely have a point. It's not like it's impossible to add things in the second draft...

Also, congratulations on admitting that you love writing! Good luck to you :)

Well! I am very new to all of this and have just admitted to myself that I love writing and need to write - whether it ever be published or any value to anyone else or not.

I say CONGRATULATIONS for getting as far as you have. I have avoided pursuing my novel ideas and have binders full of interesting first lines and opening paragraphs and/or chapters. Someday soon, I intend to pick one (and I know which one I will start on - just have to find it) and begin. I have been reading bits and blurbs about various writers lives and how they work. There is not absolute. There is no rhyme or reason. One thing I have learned is that many seem to write a first draft and then drastically revise. Maybe you need to end it and keep taking notes on further paths to explore so that you can begin the revising process. As a newbie, I hesitate to think my advice could be useful, but here is hoping that you figure it out. Cheers!

I definitely agree. I've tried padding plots before, it only made a weak plot drastically weaker. The only padding I'll do is those scenes I actually haven't written but which need to be there. And I definitely like what I'm writing - it's a strange feeling, because I've never really had it before. Usually my feelings towards any story I've written have varied from "meh" to "this really sucks."

(But then again, you know me, so... they might not have been THAT bad.)

...I ended up writing a whole blog post in answer to that last question, as it was improperly long as a comment :P

Personally, I'm of the school that thinks longer is better in a first draft. You can always slim it down later, but padding the plot is harder than weeding out weak subplots. As long as you like what you're writing, keep writing! If you don't like what you're writing, why should a reader like it?

Haha, well, I'm glad you like the title. It seems to have stuck now anyway, so finally I can stop thinking of it as "NaNoWriMo 2011"... ;)

I love thinking of titles. Granted, half the time I have these awesome titles that I need to find a plot for just so I can use them (like For Fear the Squirrels Know). And when I really need a title (like for last years NaNo) I usually draw a blank. Cause that is just how the world works.

"The mystery of the rogue sorcerer" sounds like an awesome title, and it's a book I want to read!! And who said crime novels are the only ones who can have title like that!

Well, you know why I do my victory dance every time I find any title, no matter how horrible. I have "Scarlet", "The Unicorn", "Revenge" (worst part is that this title has absolutely NOTHING to do with the story and only two titles I actually like ("The Lost House" and "Nathaniel Must Die". Problem is that the latter no longer fits my story either. :P )

Haha, exactly. She did have the good graces not to do something that would wreak havoc on the rest of the plot though, it'll only take a bit longer to get to the rest of it. (If it continues like this I don't know when I'll actually be finished with the novel...)
